Salar de Uyuni
 
 


 
 
Salar de Uyuni is (with extension 12 000 km2) the biggest salty lake over the world. It is placed in south-east Bolivia in 3 653 m.altitude. The most time of a year is without watter. Thanks to that fact it is possible to walk and ride along the bottom of the lake and see that nature mirracle „from inside
The amount of soltin the lake is about  10 bilion tuns and its thickness is about  30 m. Salt is also mined, every year in amount of 25 000 tuns. Salt from the lake goes to almost every home in Bolivia. Another crude mined in that area is Lithium, used in industry and medicine.
 
In the rain period (november to october) Salar de Uyuni become the biggest natural mirror - it is covered by small stripe of watter and it is hard to distinguish where the sky ends and where  ground begins.
What you should not miss is   „Isla del Pescado“ island, covored by  15 m tall pipe organ cacti.  Theese „trees“ are often more than 1 000 years old. In the neighborhood - sorounded by amazing nature - are many motley sludge lagoons, home of flamingos.  
For accomodation you can choose from many possibilities. You can prefer small simple rooms in houses of local inhabitants, or in a small hostels, or in very interrestin hotel built only from ashlars.
